If your compressor has had it, it can die just like that. A repair is costly. Much cheaper to get a replacement complete compressor. The price range for a new one can go from as low as 250€ to as high as 1500€. They both work and will do the job. Depending on the car, I would probably get the least expensive offer.

Make sure to have your compressor mounted by a reputable sarvice.

Other things to check are the gas drier, the belt drive, the feed valve and all high pressure hoses.

In theory a car ac system is a closed circuit. It should nevar lose any gas. On new cars, gas can keep its ptessure fo years. Once you have replaced your compressor or any element, gas is reloaded. For some reason, on repaired systems, gas tends to lose pressure after 2 to 5 years. But considering the cost of reloading gas every 2 to 5 years, it doesnt seem that bad. Anything except feeling hot in your car!!!!!
